History
Most people do not realise that the Shar Pei existed in the southern provinces of China during the Han Dynasty.
It is believed that the Chow Chow is either an ancestor or shares common ancestry with the Shar Pei due to the blue/black tongue. It was originally used to hunt, protect livestock and guard the homes and land of it's owners not to fight as thought by some. The breed was introduced to fighting due to the Chinese cultural love of wagering and in turn more wrinkles and harsher coats were bred into them to imporve the breeds ability to 'win'.
Due to heavy taxes being imposed on dog owners the breed began to slowly die out and it was only thanks to the fantastic efforts and dedication to the breed by Matgo Law in 1970 that we have this amasing breed in our presence today!!
Appearance
An alert and dignified compact dog of medium size and substance, square in profile and close coupled. Perfect traits of the Shar Pei are it's loose skin covering the head and body, small triangular ears and it 'hippopotamus' like muzzle. Be aware that while the wrinkles in puppyhood may be in abundance thes features may be limited in adulthood to the head, neck and withers.
Temperament
Anyone who has lived with these dogs before will tell you that they are intelligent, funny, loyal, independant yet highly affectionate in their own special way! They are protective of their owners and will do a good job at letting strangers know they are there but give them a few moments to sniff out this strangers new scent and it's like they've always been there.
Training and Exercise
Shar Pei are a very intelligent breed and immensley easy to train. Socialisation classes are an excellent way to train and excercise your Shar Pei, they are also an excellent tool to building up your new puppys self confidence, removing fears and building trust. A well socialised puppy will turn into a dog that is more stable in temperament and can adjust better to changes in his environment.
